The two main hormones produced by the thyroid gland are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). When the thyroid gland is functioning properly, it produces the right amount of these hormones to meet the body's needs.
However, when the thyroid gland is not functioning properly, it can lead to a thyroid imbalance, either hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) or hyperthyroidism (high thyroid function). Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone, resulting in symptoms such as weight loss, heat intolerance, and rapid heartbeat.
