Keeping up with your vaccinations is one of the best ways to stay healthy throughout the year and protect yourself and your community from the spread of harmful diseases. Take a look at some of the recommended immunizations for adults, why vaccines are so important, and how your local Michigan pharmacy can help your family:
Why are vaccines important?
Vaccines for adults are just as important as those for children. By receiving routine immunizations, you’re lowering the risk of getting sick yourself and decreasing the spread of disease in the community at the same time. By getting vaccinated, you not only put your health first but also show care and respect for children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems that you are in contact with.
Recommended immunizations for adults:
Each person is different and has their own set of unique needs, but typically the first 3 vaccinations on this list are recommended for all adults by the CDC. Others can be determined by age, pre-existing conditions, and other indicators, as reviewed by a healthcare professional.
1. COVID-19
Similar to the flu shot, COVID-19 vaccines and boosters are likely becoming a routine part of an adult’s immunization schedule to keep up with additional variants. Whether you are immunocompromised or not, we can offer guidance and answer any questions you may have about the latest booster and vaccine information.
2. Influenza
All adults should receive an annual flu shot. Flu complications can become very serious very quickly, so this vaccine is especially important if you are getting older, have a chronic illness, or are pregnant.
3. Tdap
If you’ve never received a Tdap vaccine, we highly recommend getting one as soon as possible. Tdap can protect you from tetanus (lockjaw), whooping cough (pertussis), and diphtheria. If you have gotten Tdap already, a booster is recommended every 10 years.
4. MMR
MMR stands for measles, mumps, and rubella, another recommended immunization for adults, especially those born after 1957. Some may only need 1 dose, while other adults may need 2 doses. Talk with your doctor to determine the best option for your situation.
5. Pneumonia
Another important immunization is the pneumococcal vaccine to protect your body from pneumonia. We highly suggest those over 65 receive this vaccine.
6. Hepatitis
Hepatitis B is a disease that affects the liver, and the vaccine is recommended for adults. Many may benefit from getting the Hepatitis A vaccine as well.
7. Shingles
Lastly, while shingles isn’t necessarily a life-threatening condition, it is uncomfortable and very painful, so it is prudent to receive an immunization for the shingles virus.
